Culture & Art
Teteven preserves a rich architectural and spiritual heritage from the National Revival period - monasteries, churches, chitalishtes (community cultural centers), a museum and Revival-era houses, all bearing witness to the history of Altan Teteven (the Golden Teteven).
History Museum - Teteven
Founded in 1911, with exhibits on Archaeology, Ethnography and the National Revival period (including the 1872 Arabakonak robbery). Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Sat/Sun 10:00 AM-5:00 PM.
Teteven Monastery "St. Ilia the Prophet"
A cultural monument of national significance, built in the 14th century. Its murals were added in layers over different eras, and its oldest icon dates back to 1776. The monastery was restored in 2018.
Glozhene Monastery "St. George the Victorious"
Perched on a rocky ridge of Lisets Peak near the village of Glozhene (about 29 km from Teteven), it was founded in the 13th century, making it older and higher-set than Meteora in Greece. It is the only monastery in Bulgaria never captured by the Ottomans, and it once sheltered a hideout used by Vasil Levski.
All Saints Church
Nearby stands a memorial to Vasil Levski, who, according to legend, sang his favorite hymn, "Dostoyno Est" ("It Is Truly Meet"), there in 1870.
The Hadzhiivanova House and the Bobevska House
Two well-preserved Revival-era houses showcasing the urban architecture of Altan Teteven during Ottoman rule.
Saglasie 1869 Chitalishte
Founded in 1869, this chitalishte (community cultural center) is one of the town's oldest cultural hubs.
